What multi-tenant software is, and why it works for you
“Multi-tenant” is one of those technical terms you find on cloud software spec sheets. Behind it is a simple idea with very concrete effects on cost, updates and security.
The idea in one line
Multi-tenant software is a single application serving many clients at once, keeping each client’s data separate from the others. Each client (the “tenant”) has its own space, users and settings, but the program running is the same for everyone.
The alternative is the single-tenant model: a separate copy of the software for each client, each one installed, updated and maintained on its own.
An analogy: the apartment building
Think of an apartment building. Every family has its own flat, with its own door and keys; nobody walks into anyone else’s home. But the foundations, the wiring and the lift are shared: when the roof is redone, it’s redone for everyone. Multi-tenant software works the same way.
What it changes for users
Updates for everyone, straight away
Because there is a single program, every improvement (a security fix, a new feature, an optimisation) reaches all clients at the same time. Nobody gets left behind on an old version.
Lower costs
Infrastructure, monitoring and maintenance are shared. The cost of keeping the software secure and up to date is split across many clients instead of falling on one.
More reliability
A platform used every day by many clients is tested continuously: a problem found by one is fixed for all.
What about data security?
That’s the right question. In a well-designed multi-tenant system, isolation between clients is enforced at application and database level: every request is bound to its tenant, and no user can see another client’s data. On top of that come encryption, backups and role-based permissions, as in any serious software.
Can multi-tenant and custom coexist?
